Nasser, 40 years after..

With the simple radio technology of 1960th, the 150 million Arabs, at that time, were only gathered to listen to two persons: Nasser and Um-Kulthom.. While Um Kulthom was a singer, had the magic keys of script and melody to entertain all people, Nasser was a leader who came out of the blues after WWII, touching the nerves of all population including the wealthy 1%, and spoke out the dreams, fears, ambitions and enthusiasm of Arabic Cultural Core..

He represented a generation who had witnessed the evolution of political and governing systems into modern structures of mid 1900th.. Yes, the majority of people were illiterate, poor, and driven by orthodox taboos, yet their sense of patriotism, identity and sought prosperity were commonly shared all over the world. Some of his followers made him a prophet of patriotism, opponents condemned him with great misleading, yet all agreed that his was unprecedented, unrepeated leader in a violent unpredicted spot of the world: The Middle East..

I believe he was just a man with simple conscious that enabled him to define righteous and wrong in simple quotes.. Simply reflects the simple dreams and wishes of all men and women.. and revived historical myths of pride and victories.. Every nation needs so.. Regretfully, throughout Egypt and Arab world, neo-intellectuals are overwhelmingly debating on him, forgetting the core he always considered and dreamed about: The People..

Despite all achievements and mistakes, despite all gains and losses.. Despite any love or hatred.. He was one of the leading impressive figures who had permanently changed the world.. Debates on him, add to his value, role and charisma..!
Salute to him in the 40th anniversary of his sudden deadly heart attack, during a marathon debate on Palestine..!!

Expression of Faith..

For many people; this was a marvelous expression of faith.. For some enlightened; this was interpretation of patriotism in time of despair.. For me; it is a hysterical foundation for radicalism or anarchy..!!
Religious extremism starts with over-done rituals and prayers, developed into a fake self immunity, and eventually ends up with rejection of any other.. In Egypt, the phenomenon is never new.. repeated at least twice in its modern history.. while had been repeated many times since civilization was known in this part of the world..
My own concern is related to geopolitics and bilateral influences between the Nile Valley and surrounding nations.. Always syndromes start there, then echo like throwing a stone in the water to all others.. This historically applies in both good and bad.. From mythical believing in a Creator, to brutal chopping a spouse in pitfall plots.. Some analysts underestimated this phenomenon, others overwhelmingly celebrate it.. However, it is never a man-made, but circumstantial alike Persia, Rome, Nigeria and China..!
For Egyptian, I feel petty for the anesthesia and narcotics invading hearts and minds, leading to great uncertainty.. For surrounding nations, I wonder when they would grow up and stop the childish imitations..!!

Inexperienced grads 'can't cope' with crisis..

His words had enterpreted my views, which I kept hidden avopiding hurting some nice guys I do know..!! Regradless if they Know or Not..!!

The chairman of one of the UAE’s largest conglomerates has blamed inexperienced graduates for their role in the global economic downturn. Khalaf Al Habtoor, the founder of Al Habtoor Group, told Arabian Business that despite obtaining degrees from some of the best universities in the world, recent graduates were not properly equipped to cope in the wake of the economic crisis. “I support conventional management rather than the new boardroom management, which pushes out into disaster,” he said. “Graduates from the likes of MIT and Harvard, they say on their judgment. This is the reason of the collapse all over the world.
“Most of them have the best PhDs and degrees from the best universities but they fail on practicality. This is why I would like to support the conventional business, like the old [family-run businesses], which are run in a proper way.”

When asked about family-owned companies’ lack of transparency Al Habtoor said private companies didn’t need to be transparent. “They should not be transparent because they are private companies, they don’t have their results published in the paper and in the media,” he said, adding that “their balance sheet is stronger than the public companies”.
It is not the first time Al Habtoor has made controversial comments in the wake of the downturn. In November 2009 he blamed analysts for the onslaught on media attention following Dubai World’s announcement to restructure its debt. “The worst people are analysts. They've damaged Europe before, with their analysis, they've damaged America, the dollar has weakened, and they've damaged Japan with their stories of the yen,” he said. “They can't make an economic call themselves - they are the worst people on earth.”
Al Habtoor Group is one of the UAE’s most prominent firms, employing an estimated 40,000 staff across a number of sectors, including construction, hotels and real estate.

Building Social Business By Muhammad Yunus

I'm watching closely, yet feel unease on turning Garmeen into a global enterprise..!!

Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism That Serves Humanity's Most Pressing Needs (PublicAffairs/2010) by Dr. Muhammad Yunus is an excellent rendition on how to invest in poor countries while getting a modest return and doing much good at the same time. The classic profit maximization model does not produce optimum results because many working poor simply cannot afford the higher prices. To some extent, this phenomenon is happening in the USA. Hence, there are Grameen branches in Brooklyn and Queens, New York.

Yunus guarantees loans to the poor; thereby acting as an intermediary. This is not much different from the USA government guaranteeing certain loans to borrowers. The result is that bankers are much more willing to lend money due to the guaranteed payment. Borrowers repay in small weekly amounts. Women have great drive to overcome poverty. The Grameen Bank lends $100 million dollars a month in collateral free loans averaging $200 apiece. The repayment rate is an astounding 98%.
Grameen lends money to beggars to sell toys, households and foodstuffs door-to-door. There are 100,000 beggars in the program. Since implementation of the program, over 18,000 beggars have quit begging.
Grameen offers children of borrowers money to go to school. And so, 50,000 students are pursuing medicine and engineering coursework. This program is microcredit or microfinance at its best. In some cases, a mother may be illiterate and her children go on to become physicians and engineers due to the Grameen Bank.
Grameen Violia Water sells pure water at a price that the poor can afford. In the future, the "Artificial Sun" coupled with desalination may be able to accomplish a similar feat.
The objective of the Grameen program is to overcome poverty, have a sustainable economy and have a modest return on the investment. When loans are paid back, profits are plowed back into the company not unlike the function of retained earnings in a for-profit company.
Fabio Rosa has brought solar energy to nearly 750,000 Brazilian homes with no electricity previously. There is a similar opportunity to do so for the Palestinians, if the various strategic constituencies can agree on a workable settlement.
Currently, Grameen Telecom, Grameen Energy and Grameen Well Being serve the poor. Grameen and Pfizer have a joint cooperative venture to bring affordable health care to village clinics through Grameen Healthcare.
A similar cooperative arrangement could be brought to the Medicaid program here in the United States in places like Appalachia and other rural communities where professionals are hardly ever seen practicing their craft.
The first major attempt to outline Appalachia as a distinctive cultural region came in the 1890s through the tireless efforts of the Berea College President. William Goodell Frost coined the phrase "Appalachian America" which encompassed 194 counties in 8 states.
The Grameen organizations seek to promote social business under the umbrella of charitable organizations and non-profit groups. Universities and think tanks are another great resource for Grameen and its people. A successful program has been underway to cross-fertilize the poor and the wealthy to deliver affordable bone marrow transplants for everyone. The assignment algorithms in linear programming and operations research may be utilized to bring together donors and patients alike.
Overall, the book is well written by a popular Nobelist-Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The ideas contained in this book could be applicable to both poor and rich countries since virtually every country on this earth has poor people in every walk of life.
