The future of Tango

The future of Tango: where are we heading?

I've been asked a beautiful and complex question: what will the tango be like in 10 years? Reflecting together with some students, a fascinating vision of this path has emerged.

I believe that tango is destined to grow on two parallel tracks. On one hand, I see a constant artistic evolution: an ever deeper aesthetic search and a quality of movement that refines itself thanks to the global exchange of knowledge. Tango will continue to be an art that never stops studying itself.

On the other hand, in an increasingly digital and fast-paced world, tango will become an even more precious refuge. It will be the place where we rediscover time for each other, the value of listening, and the irreplaceable magic of an authentic embrace. The more the world runs, the more tango will become our "analog house" where we rediscover human connection.

Will tango become an increasingly inclusive art form, a universal language capable of evolving without ever losing its deep soul?

If you don't have the necessary knowledge, keep your fingers away from the keyboard unless you're asking questions

The human body doesn't know how to "sing" through movement. That's why. We're honest: we think we can replicate a melody with our body, but we're just deluding ourselves. There's an unbreakable biological limit that many dancers - including us tanghers - tend to ignore: the human body is not a tuned instrument. Here's the clear distinction we need to make:

We can replicate the RHYTHM: Our body is a natural metronome. We can scan the time, the syncopation, and the energy of a musical phrase with surgical precision.

We can't replicate the MELODY: That's the point. To replicate a melody faithfully, we need to control the pitch of the notes. Our motor system doesn't have a "frequency" system similar to that of vocal cords or piano keys.

When we dance, we're not "playing" the melody. We're interpreting the feeling of the melody or reacting to its rhythm. But the exact note? That specific frequency that creates harmony? Our body isn't capable of reproducing it.

The only exception is the human voice, because it's the only biological instrument designed to modulate the pitch of sound. When we dance, we try to fill a technical gap with expression, but we must stop confusing rhythmic interpretation with melodic fidelity.

The provocation is served: are we dancers who dance to the music, or are we convinced (erroneously) to be an integral part of the melody?

The secret to a perfect hang? It's not in the technique, not in the position of the feet, not in the strength. It's in the silence of a moment when you decide to let go. ๐Ÿ•Š️ In the hang, the dancer creates a shared axis that defies gravity. But to do so, you have to give up individual control to embrace that of a partner. Trust is the core of everything. If there is no trust, the body stiffens, the connection breaks and the magic disappears. The dancer must be able to "let go" knowing that the embrace will be their home; the dancer must support with presence, listening to every micro-movement of the partner. Don't try to force the movement. If you don't feel safe, if the connection is not clear, don't do it. The beauty of tango is not in showing a complex figure, but in executing every step with a truth that takes your breath away. Better a simple step, but full of trust, than a hang performed halfway. And you, what is the moment when you feel that trust becomes "tangible" in your dance?

Tango is much more than steps and technique. It's a matter of skin. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ We often obsess over biomechanics, the figures, how to move your feet. But the truth is that Tango lives in the space between people. Connection is not just technical: it's empathy. It's learning to feel the state of mind of the person in front of you, reading their intentions before they even become movement. It's a constant dialogue between people, made of listening, presence, and glances. Dedicate time to studying connection with your partner, with other dancers, and with other dancers. When connection is real, everything else - technique, posture, elegance - becomes natural, fluid, almost effortless. If there's connection, your Tango won't just be correct: it will be alive. And you, how much time do you dedicate to the quality of your connection?
