I remember him in Alexandria Egypt 1974, when Sudan’s national team participated in an Arab Tournament. Tall enough that no need to jump, Quick enough that no catch would go missing, and Smiling enough that no heart would go uncaptured. Non violent, non naughty, non greedy, who sent back to his village all money he earned in 10 years in NBA, almost $6 million. Once retired due to body-weakness, be became a strong non-politician advocate for the peace in Southern Sudan, without teasing Arabs, Nubians or other Nilotic tribes. He had painfully suffered because of the unusual body length and subsequent stressed organs-functions. Till last moment, his smile was a magnet of hearts. Yet, he is just a simple man, who had the chance to utilize the divine gifts he had. I disagree with who would call him a hero or a great basketball player, because he was not..!!
There are many alike in Sudan and all over the world, who have no access to any chances for whatsoever. Also, there are who win battles of life in everyday, and stand after devastating losses, and keep a hope for better tomorrow to come. Working on themselves, inspiring others, or donating their surplus to the needy..
This how he can be classified as Great..
Rest in Peace Manute Bol..
