Double Standards are impersonated in the late L K Yew.. The Only Dictator been celebrated by the Democratic Media Lobbies.. If he was East European, Arab, or South Asian, the unmerciful name-n-shame campaigns would follow him to the grave.. But it is Singapore, the financial hub for Asia, the maritime gate between East and West, and a tiny city-state; a fantastic lab for both democracy and monopoly..
Yes, he had built a Nation, but a Police State..
Yes, he had assembled a cosmopolitan, but with
Iron Fest..
Yes, he had built a city, but with a Democracy
Cost..
Yes, he had built a government, with a Ruling Family..
Once he had traded affordable apartments with
sterilization of mentally disadvantage-forced-married couples (mid 1980th -
approximately 1,800 couples)
It is prohibited to chew gum in streets or public areas..!

Mr Lee can be like a
gangster and totally ruthless with his opponents. It is instructive to listen
to his interview with Tim Sebastian. Tim was a tough interviewer known to be
provocative and pointed.
There are stories of
how intimidating he could be in meetings. He had the "look" that
seemed to bore into one’s soul. He was also totally dedicated to Singapore.
Right down to making sure that it was kept clean. A story of told of how after
the passing of his beloved wife, he was walking along the Singapore River to
nurse his grief. He spotted a piece of rubbish in the river and instructed his
security detail to take a picture and report it to the relevant agency.
It's easy to judge Mr
Lee Kuan Yew and say that he was heartless and ruthless. He was dealt a very
poor deck of cards to begin with.
1. The Communists were
for more ruthless. Stories are told of execution squads where opponents were
eliminated or made examples of as a warning to others. See this for further
reading on the Communists J Cheng's answer
to How likely will Lee Hsien Loong use the ISA against people who do not share
his views on governing Singapore as his father did?
2. Sectarian violence
threatened to rip the new nation apart
3. The Malay Nationalists
were bent on destroying him and his party
4. The British were
determined to hang onto their crown colony. As the old saying goes, one does
not rule an empire by being nice. Special Branch was observing him and there
were plans to arrest him as they thought he was pro communist
5. Population boom meant
it was hard to find jobs and this was a power keg which the Communists tapped
into
6. Housing was in short
supply with many living in squalor
7. Gangs were rife and
infiltrated the police force. There were no go areas for the police. Mr Lee
Kuan Yew had to use the Internal Security Act to detain gangsters (Thanks to
Lindsay Tan for his input)
8. The economy had to be
rebuilt along with housing and infrastructure. This caused many to be displaced
and much resentment
9. Defence needed to be
built up rapidly so National Service was enacted
10. A national savings
scheme was setup to provide for retirement as the new nation count not afford a
pension type scheme
It is true that many
were affected by his actions i.e. being displaced etc. What would you have done
in his shoes? Play nice?
