Scarf and Bread

She Waited at the Train Station Every Day – 1946, Ukraine

After the war ended, Lidiya returned daily to the train station with a loaf of bread and a scarf. Her husband had been taken to a camp in Germany in 1941.
She told the stationmaster, “One day he will step off that train. Hungry. Cold.”
He never did.
But the scarf and bread were left on the bench for 1,284 days—until she quietly stopped coming.
