Mehmed the Conqueror & the Fall of Constantinople (1453)

In 1453, the world changed forever. At just 21 years old, Sultan Mehmed II, known as Mehmed the Conqueror! brought an empire to its knees. His massive Ottoman army surrounded Constantinople, the great capital of the Byzantine Empire, a city thought to be unbreakable for over a thousand years. For 57 days, the defenders resisted behind the mighty Theodosian Walls. Emperor Constantine XI fought with desperate courage, while Mehmed unleashed giant cannons and relentless assaults. On May 29th, the walls fell. Constantinople was taken. The last Roman Emperor died in battle. And the Middle Ages ended in fire and steel. This was more than just a siege. It was the moment one empire died… and another was born. From that day, Constantinople became Istanbul—the beating heart of the Ottoman world.
