Don't ask, Don't tell..

MAS Freedom Action Alert October 2, 2009
BREAKING NEWS: Obama Agrees to Keep Israel's Nukes Secret

While the Obama administration prepares to ratchet up pressure on Iran to halt the Iranian uranium enrichment program, incredibly, that same administration has agreed to continue to shield Israel from international inspection of the Israeli nuclear weapons arsenal in the Dimona Desert facility or compelling Israel to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty banning the development and deployment of nuclear weapons in countries other than the five current members of the nuclear weapons club; China, Russia, France, Britain, and of course, the United States.

This 40-year old memorandum of understanding between the United States and Israel was originally an agreement between Former President Richard Nixon and the Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. But apparently, the possible nukes that are so bad for Iran continue to be perfectly fine when they are in the possession of Israel. Indeed, the Israeli arsenal has been an "open secret" in the world for decades; most international experts estimate that Israel possesses between 80 and 200 of these atomic weapons, along with the aircraft and missile delivery systems required to use them against adversary nations.

Understandably, the nuclear abolition community and nations in the Middle East are shocked by this transparent political hypocrisy on the part of the United States. While the administration talks openly about a "military option" to remove possible nuclear weapons from Iran, a U.S. client-state in the region not only possesses these weapons of mass destruction, but they are shielded by the U.S. government from any accountability for inspection.
MAS Freedom openly advocates for universal nuclear disarmament in compliance with Article 6 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty signed and ratified by the U.S. Senate.
Our position is clear on this issue: it is an outrage to threaten one nation for possibly trying to develop nuclear weapons, while supporting Israel's possession of these weapons.

President Obama is morally and politically wrong on this issue. If nukes are intolerable for Iran to develop, they must be equally intolerable for a U.S. regional ally to possess. And those of us who support President Obama on so many other policy issues, must have the courage now to oppose his judgment on this one.
America - and the world - cannot afford a double standard when it comes to the development and deployment of these weapons.
Israel is not an exception to the rule.
