تعرت لاجلهم فغضوا البصر لاجلها

 

منذ أواخر القرن الحادي عشر، انتشرت قصّةٌ نستطيع أن نقولَ عنها أنّها استثنائيةٌ في مدينة كوفنتري الإنجليزية، حيثُ تمَّ تناقلُ القصةِ عن طريق المسافرين من ميدلاند إلى لندن.كانت السيدةُ جوديفا زوجةُ ليوفريك أحدِ أقطابِ القوى التي حكمت إنكلترا تحت لواءِ الملكِ كانوت الدانماركي. وكانت جوديفا إحدى مُلّاك الأراضي ومن أغنياءِ بلدها كوفنتري. كما كان مشهوداً ل ليوفريك أنه كانَ طاغيةً وبدون أدنى رحمةٍ طالبَ سكّانَ كوفنتري بدفعِ ضرائبَ عاليةٍ كانت تذهبُ لجيبه الخاص كحارسٍ للملك كانوت.

لم تحتمل جوديفا هذا الظلمَ الجائرَ وحاولت التدخلَ للضغطِ على زوجِها كي يتراجعَ عن قرار فرض مثلِ هذه الضرائب. فما كان منهُ إلا أن أجابها: "سيكون عليكِ أن تمشي عاريةً في شوارعِ كوفنتري، عندِها أغيّرُ رأيي". قال جملتَه هذه متيقّناً أنّ زوجتَهُ لن تُقدِمَ على هذه الخطوةِ نظراً لرزانتِها وتواضعِها وخجلِها، ولكنّ جوديفا أقدَمت على ما لا يصدّقهُ بشرٌ، إذ نزلت في يومِ التسوّقِ في كوفنتري عاريةً تماماً، مستفيدةً من شعرِها الذهبيّ الطويل الذي ستر معظم جسدَها ولم يظهر منه إلا وجهُها وساقاها،

وامتطت الحصان وجابت شوارع كوفنتري. وما كانَ صادماً أكثر ل ليوفريك ليس جرأة زوجتِه وحسب، وإنّما صدمتُه الأكبر كانت أنّ كلَّ أهل كوفنتري دخلوا منازلَهم وأسدلوا الستائرَ ليتجنّبوا النظرَ إليها وإحراجَها تقديراً منهم لتضحيتِها تلك، ممّا حدا ب ليوفريك لرفعِ الظلمِ عن المدينةِ وإلغاءِ الضرائب.

تقولُ بعضُ الرواياتِ أنّ جوديفا أرسلت حرّاسها قبلَ نزولها بيوم ليطلبوا سرّاً من أهل المدينةِ التزام بيوتِهم ذلك اليوم ولبّى الجميعُ مطلبَها لِما لها من شعبيةٍ كبيرةٍ عكسَ زوجِها. ما عدا رجلاً واحداً لم يقاوم إغواءَ اختلاسِ النظرِ إليها وهو الخيّاط توم والذي لُقّبَ لاحقاً ب (توم مختلس النظر) وقيلَ عنه أنه أصيبَ بالعمى لاحقاً كعقابٍ من السماءِ لتهوّره وشهوانيّته.

منذ تلك الحادثةِ أصبحت تقامُ طقوسٌ في حزيران تتمثّل بأن تجوب جوديفا الشوارعَ على حصانٍ أبيضَ يرافقُها رجلٌ يوحي بأنه (توم مختلس النظر) وقد أحيت جوديفا بنفسها هذه الطقوس في سنواتها الأخيرة. وما زالت مستمرّة هذه الفعالية حتى يومنا هذا. من الجدير بالذّكرِ أنّه حينها تمّ نحتُ تمثالٍ خشبيٍّ للخياط توم ووضعه في الشارع المؤدّي إلى سوق كوفنتري ليصبحَ أيقونةً للشهوانيةِ وعدم الاحترام، وحالياً توجدُ نسخةٌ طبق الأصل عن التمثال أمام كاتدرائية كوفنتري.

Godiva could not bear this unjust injustice and tried to intervene to pressure her husband to retract the decision to impose such taxes. All he had to do was answer her: “You will have to walk naked in the streets of Coventry, and then I will change my mind.” He said this sentence, certain that his wife would not take this step due to her sobriety, modesty, and shyness, but Godiva did what no human being would believe, as she went down on a shopping day in Coventry completely naked, taking advantage of her long golden hair that covered most of her body, leaving only her face and legs visible. , She rode a horse and rode through the streets of Coventry. What was more shocking to Leofric was not only his wife's audacity, but his greatest shock was that all the people of Coventry entered their homes and drew the curtains to avoid looking at her and embarrassing her, out of appreciation for her sacrifice, which prompted Leofric to lift the injustice against the city and cancel taxes. Some accounts say that Godiva sent her guards a day before her landing to secretly ask the people of the city to stay at home that day, and everyone complied with her request because of her great popularity, unlike her husband. Except for one man who did not resist the temptation to peek at her, namely Tailor Tom, who was later nicknamed (Peeping Tom) and it was said about him that he was later blinded as a punishment from heaven for his recklessness and sensuality. Since that incident, a ritual has been held in June in which Godiva roams the streets on a white horse, accompanied by a man who appears to be a “peeping tom.” Godiva herself revived this ritual in her last years. This event continues to this day. It is worth noting that at that time a wooden statue of Tailor Tom was carved and placed in the street leading to Coventry Market to become an icon of sensuality and disrespect, and currently there is a replica of the statue in front of Coventry Cathedral.
